Is your dog heading into kennels this summer?

There has recently been a chance of policy by the East Riding of Yorkshire council which now requires all licensed kennels to ensure all dogs entering the kennels are vaccinated against kennel cough. Kennel cough is a highly contagious cough in dogs caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses. It leads to a dry hacking debilitating cough that can last anywhere from a couple of days to a few months.

The term “kennel” cough implies that the infection can only be caught in kennels; this is certainly far from the truth. It only takes meeting one infectious dog for a dog to develop the condition. Vaccination is achieved by giving an intranasal vaccine, the protection from this last for 1 year. It is recommended that unvaccinated dogs are given the vaccine at least 3 weeks prior to the anticipated risk. So if your dog is heading to one of the local kennels this summer, please ensure their kennel cough vaccine is up to date.

Aldgate celebrates achieving Core Standards status

The Practice Standards Scheme is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK.  As a practice we feel that it’s important to be a part of this scheme and participate in regular assessments to ensure we are promoting and maintaining the highest standards of veterinary care.

The Practice Standards Scheme run by the RCVS involves a detailed assessment of 18 areas of the practice such as Client Experience, Premises, Surgery, Inpatient Care and Pain Management.

The practice has secured it’s current Core Standards status in Large Animal and also moved up a tier to become a General Practice in Small Animal at both of Driffield and Bridlington branches.

A great deal of on going work goes into being part of this scheme and the assessments, it’s a real team effort and we are very proud of our achievement!

Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease- 2

RVHD-2 is a new strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease that has been spreading throughout the UK over the last few years and is common in mainland Europe. It is a highly infectious and fatal disease that affects both wild and domestic rabbits.Thankfully, a vaccination is now available that covers RVHD-2 and we have this in stock. As the vaccination does not provide protection against Myxomatosis, the normal Myxo-RHD vaccination will still need to be given, at a separate time to the RVHD-2 vaccination. For lower risk pet rabbits this is an annual vaccination and for higher risk, such as breeding establishments, 6 monthly vaccinations are recommended.

If you’d like to arrange a vaccination appointment or have any further queries, please contact us at Driffield on 01377 252087 or Bridlington on 01262 677269.
